A famous five-year losing streak came to an end in Country Rugby League last Friday night when St Pat’s Panthers defeated nickname rivals Bathurst 8-4 in the Bathurst Football Challenge.

Not only was an unwanted record broken but Pats now move through to Saturday night's Bathurst Football Challenge semi-finals.

March 15, 2003 was the last time Pat's had defeated Panthers in the challenge – when a Trent Hemsworth half-time goal put the Saints through to the semi-finals.

Saints coach Kevin Grimshaw told the Country Western Advocate he was not confident of breaking the Panthers hoodoo when the scores were locked at 4-all at half-time.

“"Honestly I didn't think we had enough in the tank because Panthers had had two trial games and we've had nothing.

“I thought they might have come home better but they didn't," Grimshaw said before adding with a smile "Thank God."

CSU rugby recruit Tim West proved effective off the bench while Tim Holman relished his play-making role at five-eighth.
